THE MUSEUM
In 2002,the museum restoration project began under
the direction and supervision of the Chief of the Jersey City Fire Department, Frederick G Eggers.
The museum is located in an historic firehouse which originally was the headquarters of the Jersey City Fire Dept. Some of the items include helmets, pictures, tools and newspaper from the early 1900s to the present.
Retired Firefighter Charley Flynn will be hosting tours on Tuesdays from 10 AM to 2 PM and Sundays from 11 AM until 2 PM.
HISTORY In the spring of 1829 there were several fires in Jersey City, and public opinion demanded protection against fire. With no money in the treasury the selectmen passed an ordinance prohibiting public auction except by licensed auctioneers to raise money at this time the city had a total population of 1,025. With this money they purchased an engine for .00 and 100 feet of leather hose for .50. In March, 1871 by act of the Legislature, there was organized in Jersey City a paid fire department. This new department was organized into ten steamer companies, two hand pulled engine companies, and
five” hook and ladder” companies. The personnel consisted of one chief and one foreman and three paid members of each company; comprising a total membership of sixty men who received compensation
for their fire fighting activities.
